I've played on this mud off and on for over 2 decades. While I've tried other muds, I haven't found one that really allows for the amount of customization that I've grown used to here (and Shadowgate, which this was forked from). You can change your adjective and your long description, you can alter clothing, armor, and weapons, you can craft player gear and then enchant it. However you visualize your character, you can mold to that vision.
The class system is also very modular, taking heavy influence from DnD 3.5 with a healthy amount of homebrew content in the shape of feats and prestige classes. You can multiclass and try to min-max, but there are also rewards in the shape of capstone feats and abilities if you stick with one path. There are still dozens of builds that I haven't even gotten around to trying yet, and I'm sure more will occur to me the longer I play.
The RP is enforced, which really helps with immersion. The avatar staff really helps bring the world to life between small interactions with NPCs and the larger, more epic plots that take several sessions or even several months to tell a grand story. There are also opportunities to change the world, either through plots or even through personal purchases, like player houses or businesses.
There are OOC and NEWBIE lines, but you can turn those off to remove distractions, though the playerbase is eager to be helpful for new players. Those lines are also connected to the Discord, which means there's always someone that's able to chime in even if they aren't logged in. There is also an opt-in Player Kill system, so you don't run the risk of getting killed at the whim of griefers. It also seems having this system has kept griefer-type players away for the most part.
In short, it's been hard for me to find another place with all of these features, and I always find myself coming back to this mud.
