I recently had the opportunity to play The Gathering..., a text-based game called a MUD that is Roleplay encouraged, and has features for players with visual impairments. As someone who is visually impaired myself, I was excited to try out this game and see how it caters to players like me. I was thoroughly impressed with the game!
First, the game is able to use available programs like VIPMud to play on, which is essential for visually impaired players. The text is clear and legible, and the color they use can be adjusted according to one's preference if needed. This made it much easier for me to read and follow the instructions and storyline. They even have a soundpack for VIPMud!
I also appreciated the fact that the game has commands to remove the spam that screenreaders would read out, such as characters used for some 'graphical' designs in the rooms, borders, and in battle. I loved that players and staff are patient with my in character responses and are happy to catch me up with what's going on if I've missed something. These inclusions are a game-changer for visually impaired players and shows the staff and player commitment to making the game accessible and fun for all.
The game itself is well-written and engaging. The storylines thought by the roleplayers are intriguing, and the choices that players make have a significant impact on the outcome of the world. I found myself fully immersed in the game, and the fact that it caters to visually impaired players made the experience even more enjoyable.
I must also mention the support provided by the staff. I had a few questions about the game's features, and both staff and players were quick to respond and provide me with the answers. They really know their game! This level of support and attention to accessibility needs is commendable and sets The Gathering... apart from others.
I highly recommend this game to both visually impaired and sighted players. Kudos to the staff and their community for creating such an amazing and accessible game.
