Independent MUD discovery since 2007
About MUDVerse
MUDVerse operates as an independent, noncommercial directory for MUDs and other text-based online games. It helps players find worlds to explore while giving game owners a free place to maintain listings, connection details, and community links.
Our history
MUDVerse began in 2007 after a group of text-game players found that many existing directories were difficult to search or no longer maintained. The project grew from a simple listing catalog into a community resource with rankings, player reviews, owner-managed listings, connectivity history, MSSP observations, and a public API.
The site remains independent of the games it lists. A listing, ranking position, connectivity result, or appearance in an editorial guide is not a paid endorsement. Advertising is displayed separately and does not determine rankings or editorial inclusion.
How MUDVerse produces its information
- Listings: Game owners and community members submit descriptive information, tags, connection settings, websites, and community links. Owners can claim and update listings.
- Rankings: Monthly rankings reflect visitor votes subject to one vote per visitor per rolling 24 hours. They are not editorial scores and do not represent verified population or universal quality.
- Connectivity: Automated checks attempt to reach published MUD hosts. “Confirmed Online” and active-game pages use disclosed time windows; web-only games are excluded because their websites are not tested.
- Player observations: When a game publishes MSSP data, MUDVerse may display recent player-count observations. Missing samples are not treated as zero players.
- Editorial research: Guides and comparisons are checked against official project pages, stores, documentation, or release repositories where possible. Time-sensitive pages display a review date and disclose relevant relationships.
Methods and limitations are published near claims that depend on MUDVerse data. See the ranking methodology, active-game methodology, and MUD client research notes for details.
Corrections
Information about long-running community projects changes, and automated observations can be incomplete. Listing owners should update incorrect game information through their MUDVerse accounts. Anyone can report a factual error, broken link, attribution concern, or editorial correction through the Contact page or by emailing brendan@withmorehope.org.
Please include the affected page and the information that should be reviewed. Corrections are evaluated against owner-provided information, first-party MUDVerse observations, and authoritative project sources as appropriate.
