I've played many muds over the years, mostly enjoying Tdome back in the late 90s while going to college. That was a time when my only commitment was classes. Fast forward 20+ years and time is more precious. All the challenging things of muds then like making rent, death traps, and con death just sound like a job now, and nobody wants a second one of those. Luckily, this game got rid of those and focuses on the things I find fun - running around the world, gathering equipment, implants, and tattoos, smashing heads, and talking smack!
When I'm in a video game mood, my interests tend towards roguelites like Hades or Dead Cells. Nukefire's remort system scratches that same 'live, die, repeat' loop for me. Each remort gains you a little bit of power, and you get big bumps when you hit major milestones like a prestige class, legendary status, or 100 remorts for an individual class.
The game is clearly a labor of love for its immortals. Re-creating a game with all the features of Tdome from scratch is no small feat. They have taken it well beyond that. They continue to move the game forward every day with features, fixes, and areas. There are small quality of life things like an automatically maintained id list, direct access to stats for anything being auctioned, prompt customization and many 'auto' actions for common tedium like unlocking and opening doors. One of the most interesting recent changes involves areas that scale with the players entering. This keeps new things accessible even as long time players get more powerful.
There are often small impromptu quests as well as bigger ones around game and real world time frames. You might imagine that with the power growth from the remort system that quests would be dominated by ultra-powerful players, but that isn't true. They are well designed to allow everyone old and new a chance to participate and win. Player milestones are celebrated as well. When your character reaches legendary status after a certain number of remorts, one of the immortals designs a custom piece of equipment for you.
If you're still reading this and old enough to be considering a midlife crisis, come on over to Nukefire. It'll be cheaper and take less time than something like a fancy sports car. Even if you're not to the midlife crisis point, you should still give it a try if you're still here since something above caught your attention enough to keep reading.
