I came into GEAS with absolutely no MUD experience. I had MUSH experience, all roleplay no gameplay, and liked it well enough, but it didn't grab me.
GEAS was different. Inspired by Tolkien and other classic fantasy, it has not only its own unique game lore, but a huge gameplay history that you can discover through in game player written books, and talking to long-time players IC. There's Tshaharks, huge fighting lizard people created generations ago by Human mages. Everyone should try out being a Tshahark.
Combat strategy has many layers, and you benefit from learning the nuances IC as well. The culture is strongly in favor of doing everything you can IC rather than OOC, which makes quests and secrets very rewarding to discover or be shown.
You can play both "to the stereotype" or do something different - racial aptitudes funnel characters towards a bit of an easiest possible path (heavy armored dwarves, intellectual elves, sneaky halflings, etc) but you can make a name for yourself doing something unique. To me, the big unique personalities of long time and active characters make the game world vivid.
Honestly, anything else is going to seem too boxed in, too gamey, too standard, in comparison. This is my MUD for life now. What more do you need to know? Try it!
